Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is a very effective treatment strategy for desensitizing the impact of trauma. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in 1987 to help heal clients’ traumatic memories. It is a synthesis of CBT, body awareness, mindfulness and imaginal relaxation. I use it to help people re claim their inner strength, gain resilience and de-fang the negative associations to the traumatic event(s).
It is important to note that not everyone is ready for EMDR at the time of referral. Usually, some preparation work needs to be done. Timing the use of EMDR is determined by a trained, experienced clinician who completes the evaluation and determines the most effective course of treatment. This is discussed with the client. Severity, nature and repeated exposure to trauma also impact the length of treatment. It is not designed for long term therapy.
